Called Pelleve, the process uses radio-wave technology to induce heat into the skin, stimulating collagen growth to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

The technology was developed by Ellman International, a medical company in Oceanside, N.Y., that got its start making equipment for dental surgery.

Pelleve was granted FDA approval as a facial wrinkle reducer in May 2009, said Tom Harper, vice president of global marketing at Ellman. The equipment was initially used to stop bleeding during surgery, said Harper, adding that the treatment is now being used in well over 200 facilities in the country. “Patients seem to feel there’s a lot of value in the product, especially around the eyes and jawline,” he said.

WHAT TO EXPECT The doctor or technician will apply a protective gel, then run the handpiece over the area being treated. Patients generally report feeling a sensation of warmth. “It goes to a point where it feels very hot,” said cosmetic surgeon Amiya Prasad, one of several Long Island doctors using the treatment. “Most people tolerate it very well,” he added. No numbing or anesthesia is required (or desired since they want you to speak up if it gets too hot).

DOES IT WORK? “Pelleve has worked out to be a good service for our patients, for the person who is not quite ready for a face-lift,” Prasad said. Likewise, Greenvale dermatologist Deborah S. Sarnoff says patients have been happy with the procedure, which she often combines with Botox and fillers. “A Pelleve treatment is administered to improve overall skin laxity,” she said, “then I inject filler to areas that may need more volume and Botox to relax the dynamic wrinkles.”

Sarnoff says that, unlike other treatments, “patients see an immediate improvement,” though many doctors suggest two or three sessions for the best results.

HOW’S IT DIFFERENT? Pelleve differs from Thermage, another procedure that uses radio frequency, in that the handpiece can be moved back and forth over the skin, which doctors say allows them to more easily target problem areas.

COST Harper says costs vary widely. In this area, treating the entire face runs $1,500 to $2,000 a session; treating a single area (like the eyes) can run $500 to $1,000.

WHO SHOULD HAVE IT? Both Prasad and Sarnoff say the ideal Pelleve patient is someone with mild to moderate wrinkling or skin laxity, or someone who had a face-lift and wants to maintain the results.

CBS 2 Has What You Need To Know About Nutri-Cosmetics

April 21, 2010, New York (CBS)- It seems like there’s a pill for every problem. Ache, pain or ailment, just head to the drug store. But would you buy a pill to make you pretty?

Now, it’s an option available right in the vitamin aisle.

CBS 2 HD recently was shown two photos – of women who were said to be identical twins. But for one of the sisters doctors said years of bad habits made her look considerably older.

“The skin in many ways reflects our health,” Dr. Amiya Prasad said.

Smoking and sun exposure are the biggest culprits in making you look older, but there is another contributing factor you may not realize — a poor diet lacking in certain vitamins and minerals.

“Because what you do on the inside does affect your skin,” Dr. Prasad said.

With many people saying they’re too busy to cook and get the proper nutrition, a new product has been developed spawning an industry called nutri-cosmetics. They’re vitamins and other supplements designed specifically to help the skin, hair and nails. They promise to not only keep you looking young, but help reverse some of the damage you may have already done.

“It’s something that we have always known in the spa industry to be beneficial — that nutrition really affects the skin. It is definitely a growing category,” esthetician Caitlin Conn said.

Nutri-cosmetics can contain a whole variety of ingredients that have been proven to help the skin — like lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes than can protect against sun damage. Green tea complex is used for treating acne. Vitamins A and C are essential for the health of collagen, and Omega 3 fatty acids are proven to improve skin texture and softness.

“You can tell people to eat healthy and do the right things, but now you put a product together that bridges that connection. It will probably be easier for people to understand and certainly very convenient,” Dr. Prasad said.

However, Dr. Prasad pointed out multi-vitamins can be equally as beneficial.

“It’s been a way of life, you are what you eat,” Barbara Smith-Hawkins said.

“I’m not going to say how old I am but no one believes how old I am,” added Gail Douglas of Valley Stream, N.Y.

Smith-Hawkins and Douglas are both in their 50s. They said supplements have been a big part of their daily beauty routines for years.

“Vitamin C, green tea, fish oil, vitamin E,” Smith-Hawkins said.

But both women also said they exercise and eat healthy diets, which doctors said are the key to looking your best.

“The pills can’t make you prettier in isolation. Your diet has to be right. You have to exercise. You have to maintain. It’s all about habits,” Dr. Prasad said.

Other good skin habits include managing your stress levels and handling your skin gently when washing or removing makeup.

On March 24, the scene was set ,and the sun was shining on 7th Street in Garden City. Le Visage Spa’s 2010 Spring Fashion & Beauty Luncheon came just in time to mark the first official week of Spring. Held at the Seventh Street Cafe, the special event satisfied many guests who enjoyed the champagne spritzers, the excellent service, and the delicious menu selections. At the door,  many kind guests donated women’s suits for Dress for Success, an organization dedicated to support the development of under-privileged women in both work and life.

After orders were taken, Le Visage Spa’s Gail Douglas commenced as our host. First, Nordstrom’s Personal Stylist Heather Harewood shared her multi-faceted fashion insights. Armed with a clothing rack and many great ideas, Mrs. Harewood demonstrated all the options a woman has to easily add a little “pop” or “flare” to any body shape and any outfit. She highlighted the importance of being yourself and accentuating the positive through one’s stylistic choices.

Shortly after, Le Visage Spa’s Medical Esthetician Barbara Smith-Hawkins revealed the “new” her. Only two weeks ago, Barbara underwent Dr. Prasad’s Quick Recovery Facelift along with the Micro Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment. As someone in the field of beauty, she shared her experience being on the other side as the patient. Barbara and her B&A photos emphasized the benefits of having a face lift procedure with little downtime.
